The Olympic torch's journey to the Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, is a familiar sight to many. However, during a stop in Orlando, Florida, the route took an unusual turn as it crossed over water with the help of a Sea-Doo Islandia sportboat. The boat, powered by a Mercury engine, carried the torch across a half-mile stretch of Lake Eola in downtown Orlando. Six Sea-Doo watercraft accompanied the boat, towing a collection of pyrotechnic kites while a fireworks display lit up the sky above.
Bombardier, the parent company of Sea-Doo and Ski-Doo, will have a significant presence at the Winter Games. They will supply snow grooming vehicles to maintain the hills and half pipes, as well as 50 Ski-Doo snowmobiles and Bombardier ATVs. Kawasaki will be presenting the national series and most of the events will be held along the California coast (Ventura, Oceanside, and Encinitas) for four consecutive weeks in May. However, the final two rounds will take place in Laughlin, NV to coincide with Formula One powerboat racing and the Laughlin River Days festival. The new Freeride category will replace Freestyle at the first six ocean events, with Pro Freestyle only appearing during the final two rounds of competition in Laughlin. While the total number of rounds remains at eight, there will only be four weekends of competition, with each day counting as a separate round. The Freeride champions will be crowned after Round 6, with the events of Rounds 7 and 8 determining the Pro Freestyle winner.
Executive Director Kirk Holland of the IJSBA explained that the surf-oriented sites create a spectacular and colorful venue for professional watercraft racers to showcase their talents. Holland compared personal watercraft racing to sports like supercross and snocross, stating that they offer exciting, high-flying action. The tour will be televised by The Speed Channel. Those interested in the 2002 Pro Watercross Tour can contact tour promoter FreeSpace Media Group or the International Jet Sports Boating Association for more information. The 2002 Pro Watercraft Tour Schedule is as follows: Round 1 & 2: May 3-4, San Buenaventura, Ventura, California (IJSBA Pro Ski/Pro Runabout 1200, FWA Pro Ski Freeride/Pro Runabout Freeride) Round 3 & 4: May 10-11, Oceanside Pier, Oceanside, California (IJSBA Pro Ski/Pro Runabout 1200, FWA Pro Ski Freeride/Pro Runabout Freeride) Round 5 & 6: May 17-18, Moonlight Beach, Encinitas, California (IJSBA Pro Ski/Pro Runabout 1200, FWA Pro Ski Freeride/Pro Runabout Freeride) Round 7 & 8: May 31-June 1, Laughlin Bridge, Laughlin, Nevada (IJSBA Pro Ski/Pro Runabout 1200/Pro Freestyle) Victor Sheldon, a former Pro Ski champion, has found a new passion in motocross racing. On January 4th, Sheldon competed in the EA Sports Supercross Crossover Session, a celebrity event leading up to the Anaheim Supercross. He faced off against 24 extreme sports athletes on the Anaheim track, including snowboarder Aaron Vincent, skateboarder Salmon Agah, and wakeboarder Cobe Mikacich. Despite stiff competition from rapper/PWC racer/motocross racer Robbie Van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice, Sheldon emerged victorious and demonstrated his skills as a motocross racer. His victory speech over fourth-place Van Winkle is rumored to have included the statement "word to your mutha."
